Portrait of Imani Sieminski

Imani Sieminski (°2003, Genk) is a Belgian filmmaker of German and Surinamese heritage, currently based in Belgium. She grew up in Houthalen-Oost, a former mining region in Limburg, an environment that deeply shaped her sensitivity to migration, memory, and identity. Growing up between cultures and languages, she developed an acute sensitivity to the spaces in between: between belonging and not belonging, between what is said and what is felt, between what remains and what disappears.

Her first artistic practice began in contemporary dance, which brought her to Antwerp at a young age to pursue formal training. Following an injury, her attention gradually shifted toward photography and film, where she found a new way to explore movement, time, and emotional presence. From that search, she began making audiovisual work and later went on to study film at LUCA School of Arts.

As a child, Imani developed a deep connection to cinema through watching films with her grandfather. What fascinated her was not only the story, but the feeling that lingered after a film ended, the quiet impact of images, rhythm, and atmosphere. That fascination grew into a filmmaking practice in which experience, rather than plot, takes centre stage.

Her work explores themes of identity, memory, absence, family bonds, and belonging. Hotels, family homes, and temporary dwellings recur throughout her films as spaces charged with memory, places where people pass through and leave invisible traces.

Formally, her practice is characterised by slow, observational camerawork, associative montage, and a strong awareness of sound. Silence and ambient textures form autonomous layers that evoke inner tensions and emotional undercurrents rather than explicitly stating them. Working between fiction, documentary, and hybrid forms, Imani explores cinema as a space for thought rather than closed narrative.

She recently completed her new short film Deux Jours (2026), a contemplative fiction film set in a Brussels hotel that explores quiet encounters, routines, and the invisible emotional connections that emerge within temporary spaces. In 2026, her pitch for the film received the Sabam Student Pitch Award at DOCVILLE.
